Sports and Exercise Medicine

Sport and Exercise Medicine physicians have specialized training and skills that position them to be caregivers for active patients of all ages.

A sport and exercise medicine physician is specialized in:

  • The diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of athletic injuries.
  • The management of illness and exercise-related medical issues. (e.g. exercise-induced asthma, diabetes, and exercise in pregnancy.)
  • Exercise prescription and counseling for sport-specific activities and healthy living, including pre-participation screening.
  • Optimal management of chronic MSK conditions like osteoarthritis.
  • The prevention of athletic injuries and medical problems, including concussions in sport.
  • The appropriate use of orthotics, bracing, and taping.
  • Sports safety promotion.

Physician visits are covered by OHIP. A valid health card must be presented at each visit.

Please note that a referral from a Physician/Medical Doctor is required to book an appointment with the Sports Medicine Physician. The Sports Medicine Physician does not see injuries related to WSIB or motor vehicle accidents.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

PRP is derived from a small sample of a patient’s own blood and is rich in healing platelets, growth factors and anti-inflammatory substances. PRP may promote healing and slow the progression of cartilage change in osteoarthritis. The process of collection, processing, and injection of PRP is uncomplicated and safe.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Injections (Viscosupplementation)

Viscosupplementation refers to the injection of biologically derived HA into arthritic joints. HA is naturally produced in our joints and acts as a lubricant. In an osteoarthritic joint, the quality and quantity of this fluid are reduced and can be ‘topped up’ with Visco injections. This is commonly referred to as ‘oil for the engine’. These injections can improve pain, stiffness, and function of the joint. Newly available HA products are now indicated for soft tissue injections at the elbow and heel areas as well.

Cortisone injections

Cortisone injections are commonly used when inflammation is present, as in cases of bursitis and arthritis. Swelling, pain and stiffness can be modified with onset typically within 48 hours of injection.
